American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel

First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic—an intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman.

A storm is coming . . .

Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.

But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.

Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.

American Gods is Neil Gaiman’s best and most ambitious novel yet, a scary, strange, and hallucinogenic road-trip story wrapped around a deep examination of the American spirit. Gaiman tackles everything from the onslaught of the information age to the meaning of death, but he doesn’t sacrifice the razor-sharp plotting and narrative style he’s been delivering since his Sandman days.

Shadow gets out of prison early when his wife is killed in a car crash. At a loss, he takes up with a mysterious character called Wednesday, who is much more than he appears. In fact, Wednesday is an old god, once known as Odin the All-father, who is roaming America rounding up his forgotten fellows in preparation for an epic battle against the upstart deities of the Internet, credit cards, television, and all that is wired. Shadow agrees to help Wednesday, and they whirl through a psycho-spiritual storm that becomes all too real in its manifestations. For instance, Shadow’s dead wife Laura keeps showing up, and not just as a ghost–the difficulty of their continuing relationship is by turns grim and darkly funny, just like the rest of the book.

Armed only with some coin tricks and a sense of purpose, Shadow travels through, around, and underneath the visible surface of things, digging up all the powerful myths Americans brought with them in their journeys to this land as well as the ones that were already here. Shadow’s road story is the heart of the novel, and it’s here that Gaiman offers up the details that make this such a cinematic book–the distinctly American foods and diversions, the bizarre roadside attractions, the decrepit gods reduced to shell games and prostitution. “This is a bad land for Gods,” says Shadow.

More than a tourist in America, but not a native, Neil Gaiman offers an outside-in and inside-out perspective on the soul and spirituality of the country–our obsessions with money and power, our jumbled religious heritage and its societal outcomes, and the millennial decisions we face about what’s real and what’s not. –Therese Littleton

Bee Movie (Widescreen Edition)

“Bee Movie” is a comedy that will change everything you think you know about bees. Having just graduated from college, a bee by the name of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) finds himself disillusioned with the prospect of having only one career choice—honey. As he ventures outside of the hive for the first time, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of the bee world and talks to a human, a New York City florist named Vanessa (Renee Zellweger). He is shocked to discover that the humans have been stealing and eating the bee’s honey for centuries. He ultimately realizes that his true calling in life is to set the world right by suing the human race. That is until the ensuing chaos upsets the very balance of nature. It is up to Barry to prove that even a little bee can spell big changes in the world. There aren’t a lot of choices in a bee’s life: a bee attends a few days of school, graduates from college, and chooses a job in the hive that he’ll labor at for the rest of his life. Barry (Jerry Seinfeld) is different from his best friend Adam (Matthew Broderick) and all the other bees: he wants to see the world outside the hive and can’t begin to contemplate doing the same job for his entire life. Naturally, the life of the “pollen jock” bees appeals to Barry because it’s the only job that takes a bee outside the hive and into the larger human world. Once outside the hive, Barry breaks the most sacred bee law and speaks to a human named Vanessa (Renée Zellweger) in order to thank her for saving his life. A relationship quickly blossoms and leads Barry to the discovery that humans are stealing honey from the bees and selling it for their own profit. Vowing to hurt the humans the one place they’ll feel it, Barry brings a legal suit against the honey industry and the courtroom drama begins. There are some hysterical moments in the film, as one would expect from a Seinfeld production, and an abundance of one-liners, double-meanings, slapstick humor, and innuendo-laden dialogue that will keep adults guffawing throughout the show. Still, the whole concept of seeing the life of a common pest through non-human eyes is getting repetitive thanks to films like Ratatouille, Flushed Away, Open Season, and Over the Hedge. It should be noted, though, that this first foray into animation by Jerry Seinfeld was four years in production due to its collaborative nature, so its theme may actually have well predated all of the aforementioned films. Children ages 5 and older will love the bees’ silly antics, though many of the jokes will go right over their heads and parents should be cautioned about some mildly suggestive humor. More than just a comical film about the life of one very different honeybee, Bee Movie is a social commentary that pokes fun at human behavior while stressing the importance of doing even the most menial job well and championing the power of working together toward a common goal. There’s even a lesson to be learned from the bees about controlling one’s temper. –Tami Horiuchi

Red (Special Edition)

Frank (Willis) is a former black-ops CIA agent living a quiet life alone… until the day a hit squad shows up to kill him. With his identity compromised, Frank reassembles his old team Joe (Freeman), Marvin (Malkovich) and Victoria (Mirren) and sets out to prove that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. Stand back and watch the bullets fly in this explosive action-comedy that critics call a rip-roaring good time.

DVD Features
Deleted and Extended Scenes; Access Red: Immersive 6-part interactive feature including pop up trivia, videos, interviews and more!; Audio commentary w/ retired CIA field agent Robert BaerYou can take the agent out of the CIA, but you can’t take the CIA out of the agent–or so discovers Frank Moses, to his chagrin. Frank, played by Bruce Willis, simply wants to live his simple life with his government pension. But when a troop of black-ops guys descends on his house one night and blows it to smithereens, Frank realizes he needs to get a few of his old colleagues together and find out what’s what. That’s the premise of Red, a jolly action flick based on a rather more serious graphic novel. Because Frank’s old posse includes kicky roles for Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and a tea-pouring, hot-lead-spraying Helen Mirren, the movie boasts a certain appeal just at the “Holy cow, can you believe who’s in this thing?” level. Actually, the rest of the cast is pretty sweet as well: Mary-Louise Parker steals much of the film as Frank’s unsuspecting civilian date (swept into the action because she might innocently become a CIA target, too), Brian Cox hams it up as Frank’s former Soviet adversary (wistfully recalling how he always wanted to assassinate a US president), and Karl Urban (Star Trek) supplies brawn and brains as the current CIA agent in charge of bringing the hammer down on Frank. The breezy tone barely pauses to notice the semi-serious story point at the heart of the plot (a hazily recalled disaster in Guatemala many years earlier), nor the dead bodies that pile up around the edges of the action. Flightplan director Robert Schwentke lets his actors act up, which is not a capital crime given the skills of the cast list, and he shoves the plot along with fitting speed. It’s not art, but as a multiplex diversion, Red scatters a decent share of legitimate jolts and rim-shot one-liners. –Robert Horton

The Muppet Movie: The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray + Digital Copy)

Celebrate The Nearly 35th Anniversary of the ultimate frogs-to-riches story with the one that started it all—The Muppet Movie. Laugh along with the mostly-true story of how the Muppets got their start, now for the first time ever in vibrant Blu-ray hi-def picture and sound.

From the very first “plunk!” of Kermit’s banjo playing “The Rainbow Connection” (Oscar nominee, Best Original Song, 1979), to the hysterical road trip that brings our fearless frog together with Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal and most importantly of all, Miss Piggy, join the jam-packed heartwarming hilarity, outrageous antics and big-shot Hollywood cameos. It’s bursting with hilarious bonus extras including an all-new Frog-E-Oke sing-along with your favorite Muppet songs.

As Kermit and the gang sing—”Life’s like a movie!” Make The Muppet Movie part of your family, and have the time of your life as the Muppets share laughter and fun with “the Lovers, the Dreamers…and You.” Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning’s sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You’ll believe a frog can sing! –Sean Axmaker

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THE HOBBIT, names of the characters, items, events and places therein are trademarks of The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Middle-earth Enterprises under license to New Line Productions, Inc. All rights reserved.A fellow named Bilbo Baggins lives in the Shire–but perhaps you’ve made his acquaintance already? If you’re familiar with J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the films that Peter Jackson wrought from them, of course you have. And here is Bilbo, played again by Ian Holm, shuffling about his hobbit hole and recalling a grand adventure from his past, when he left the Shire with a wizard and some dwarves and found a certain ring and a very peculiar creature named Gollum. This is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which Jackson and his LOTR crew have expanded on from Tolkien’s 1937 novel. And boy, have they expanded: this 169-minute escapade is merely the first of three separate movies made from that one book, and it gets the young Bilbo (played by Martin Freeman) only a little ways into his grand trek. Many loud, garish battles and chases fill the time, along with some (it pains one to say it) fairly tedious adolescent-level humor. Jackson tends to dally with scenes that might have been more effective in half the time, and the bumptious dwarves are some of the least charming characters in the Tolkieniad. Thank goodness, there’s Gollum (played, as before, by the digitally transformed Andy Serkis), who shares a riddle-trading scene with Bilbo that sends genuine shivers up the spine. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, and a few other LOTR folk make cameos, but the more An Unexpected Journey goes on, the less you sense the magic afoot. Despite the fun moments, this feels like a prologue for the actual movie, which is still to come. (Originally released on many screens in 3-D, the film was also showcased in some theaters in a pioneering format that increased the clarity of the image–or made it look like a soap opera, depending on your receptiveness to the flat, frictionless technology.) –Robert Horton

The Carol Burnett Show: Carol’s Favorites (Collectors Edition)

The Carol Burnett Show is one of the most popular and beloved shows in the history of television and it is now available on DVD to all audiences for the very first time. Starting in 1967 and continuing for 11 straight years, The Carol Burnett Show was the ultimate variety show with music, acting, larger-than-life guest stars, and, of course, comedy… sketches, jokes and parodies that are as funny now as they were 40 years ago. All the episodes in the DVD collections were personally chosen by Carol, and all DVDs feature full, unedited episodes as they originally aired on television. If you were around a television set in the 1960s and ’70s, you were probably a fan of Carol Burnett, whose I’ll-do-anything comedic attack made her the essential link between Lucille Ball and every comedienne who ever found success on Saturday Night Live, from Gilda Radner to Tina Fey. Burnett’s variety show ran from 1967 to 1978 and produced 278 episodes, so this six-disc selection is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s subtitled Carol’s Favorites and features 16 episodes in full, lending a representative taste of the show’s wacky vibe. Certain legendary sketches had to be included, including “Went with the Wind,” a send-up of Gone with the Wind that had Carol making one of the great walk-on sight gags in the history of television. Among the other movie parodies, a spoof of the Airport series of airborne disaster pictures is especially good at skewering the clichés of the genre.

The guest stars are a collection of ’70s TV faces: Dinah Shore, Roddy McDowall, Betty White, and Carol’s favorites Jim Nabors and Ken Berry. A few are unexpected–Maggie Smith and Joanne Woodward, for instance–and there’s a memorable appearance by the Jackson 5 during which a sketch is interrupted by a mild earthquake (the cameras keep running and Burnett ad-libs like a master). You’ll also see some installments of “The Family,” the ongoing sketch that, at its best, walked an interesting line between hilarity and quiet (or loud) desperation. The time-capsule aspects that really date the show are the famously crazy costumes by Bob Mackie and the old-school variety-show musical numbers, some of which have a sincerity that was already unfashionable by 1974–although it should be noted that a musical spoof of “Little Red Riding Hood,” performed in Spanish by a supposed Mexican troupe, is a surreal exercise that predicts a later kind of conceptual comedy. Burnett’s talents extend to her weekly improvs with the audience, and the comedy gold mined by Harvey Korman and Tim Conway remains glittering.

The extras include a good long (46 minutes!) interview with Korman and Conway riffing on each other; a couple of tributes/profiles of the show and Burnett that emphasize her status as a female comedy pioneer; a 35-minute cast reunion with Burnett, Conway, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner; brief (and randomly scattered) intros to certain episodes, with Burnett, Korman, and Conway; a full 33-minute episode of The Garry Moore Show, where Burnett came to prominence as a cast member; and other reminiscences. A 12-page booklet describes the set’s episodes and sketches–especially useful because the shows here are not presented in chronological order. –Robert Horton

Fast & Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6 (Limited Edition Packaging) (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Few movie franchises can match the cheerfully improbable rise of the Fast & Furious series, which has escalated from humble B-movie beginnings to genuine gotta-see-to-believe blockbuster status. (For clarity’s sake, it should be noted that in this case, “humble” means a film where the camera routinely swooped through a car’s exhaust manifold.) This sixth installment may take a while to match the cruising speed of its immediate predecessor (the awesomely overstuffed Fast Five) but once it does, look out. Picking up more or less where the last one left off, the story finds the gang of Wacky Racers living off of the grid and enjoying the good life. Quiet Time comes to a halt, however, with the arrival of Federal Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), who needs their help in stopping an elite team of London mercenaries. Everything that can possibly collide and/or explode, does. Director Justin Lin, who has been handling the series since 2006’s Tokyo Drift, goes all out this time around, bringing back old cast members, reinforcing the endearingly corny ties between the characters–just try and count the number of times Vin Diesel growls “family”–and adding Haywire‘s Gina Carano to increase the already copious bruising ratio. While such an attempt at delighting the longtime fans is admirable, the attention paid to the large roster may baffle viewers not up on their series mythology, particularly during the rather slow first act. Things correct themselves fiercely at the midpoint, though, when a tank hits the freeway in a sequence that should, by all rights, be impossible to top. Lin and Co. somehow manage to crank up the volume even further, however, with a finale involving an exceedingly large plane, the world’s largest runway, and a fleet of cars sporting grappling hooks. If all that wasn’t already enough, stick around for the closing credits, which suggests that the filmmakers have found a way to up the ante for the next sequel. You know that old saying about how less is more? Yeah, that’s totally not the case here. –Andrew Wright
